I still remember finding WordPress for the first time. I decided to start a blog; I barely read a blog before, let alone created my own. Although I had some ancient knowledge of HTML and CSS dating back to the late 1990s (when I created a website that only contained notepad and FTP software), it was out of my reach.
WordPress is our favorite way to start a blog because it is very easy to work with. But the truth is, it’s very easy to forget how intimidating WordPress is when you first start a blog. The thing that provides a lot of functionality might not be completely intuitive for the blogging newbie. There is a lot to think about, such as settings, themes, plugins, and more.
With the above in mind, I wanted to create a really simple guide to start blogging on WordPress. This is a simple and basic step-by-step guide to starting out a WordPress blog ready for the entire world to see.

Step 1: Get WordPress Hosting
Before starting a blog, you need a place to host your blog. There are hundreds and possibly thousands of hosting companies available on the web, but not all amenities are created equal. The first rule of thumb is that nothing is free in life, especially hosting. So if you see a company that advertises completely free, don’t buy it from them. It would be much better if you invested between $ 3 and $ 5 a month on a suitable hosting plan.
Hostinger shared WordPress hosting
Hostinger is one of the most popular names when it comes to web hosting. They offer a variety of plans, but with our link, you can get your own shared hosting plan starting at only $ 1.89 per month (for the first year, for new customers only). This is a great option if you are just starting out and don’t have a lot of budgets to invest in your website yet.
Both of these are an excellent choice for a new blog. Hostinger offers budget-conscious plans that are more than capable of handling a new blog.
Most importantly, all of these plans work well for WordPress. This is our preferred way to start a blog because it is easy to use, offers a lot of great features, and is very flexible (thanks to all the available themes and plugins).

Step 2: Install WordPress and configure settings
As mentioned, the three hosting plans we recommend are fully compatible with WordPress and ideal if you want to start a blog. Once you select a plan, you will need to install and configure WordPress for your website. Depending on your host, your WordPress installation can vary slightly, but no matter which one you choose, your site should be up and running and ready for blogging in no time.
- Hostinger features a fast, one-click setup when registering. Simply log into your account and select the “Install WordPress” option on the website. From there, just follow the onscreen instructions to define your domain name and create your WordPress admin login information. - Other hosts – If you are using a different host, no problem. You can install WordPress on any host (just download and install WordPress manually).
Once WordPress is installed and ready, you can head to your URL to log in to WordPress. There should be a link to login to WordPress from your hosting account (usually it goes to
your-url.com/wp-login, wp-admin, or something similar). Use the admin name or email and password that you created when setting up your information for your hosting account.
WordPress is highly customizable (in fact, it’s 100% customizable since it’s open-source software), but for this guide, I’m referring to the settings accessed through your WordPress dashboard. If you hover over the Settings menu item in the sidebar, you will see some options.
A daunting list may sound, but it doesn’t have to be There are only a few of the main settings on these pages that you should worry about at this point. Let’s review all of them.
WordPress General Settings
The most important settings on this page are the fields for entering the website title and logo. You can come back and change them at any time, but it’s nice to have an idea of what you want to wear early on to achieve a consistent brand. The title will probably be your site name, brand, or name (if it’s a personal blog) so it’s handy. For your motto, think about what you want to start a blog with in the first place. It should describe your blog topic. You can also change the date and time format from this page if you wish.
Write a WordPress configuration
In this section, you can set a default post type and category for your articles. Since you haven’t started blogging yet, this is a section that you can return to at a later time. It’s not a critical step, although it can help speed up the blogging process in a few seconds by tweaking the default settings to your liking.
Read WordPress settings
From the reading tab, you’ll want to configure what your homepage displays. Depending on the topic you’re using, you might want to use your most recent blog posts or a dedicated static page.
Discuss WordPress settings
This page contains all the settings related to comments on your site. At this point, your main considerations should be whether you will allow people to post comments and whether the comments need to be approved manually. There are other options you can check out, although most of the default settings should work fine.
WordPress Multimedia Setup
This is where you can find the crop options for the media (images) that you add to your website. WordPress includes options for thumbnail, medium, and large crop sizes. You can leave it or customize it if you want to use the predefined sizes in your posts.
WordPress Settings Permalink
Permanent links are what appears in your browser’s address bar when a visitor is on a specific page of your site; This is your URL plus the unique identifier of the page or post. For example, the permalink for this page is “start-WordPress-blogging”.
On this configuration page, you will be shown a list of different permalink formats. By default, WordPress is configured to use the post id, and it’s not very nice. Instead, we generally prefer the post name option and recommend it because it’s easy to use, visually appealing, and an extra SEO boost (using your keyword in your slug is usually a good thing).
Bonus: your profile
Aside from the general WordPress settings, you should also take a look at your user profile, which can be found under
Users> Your Profile or by clicking on your name at the top right of the screen.
The details on this screen are often displayed by topic (usually like the author of the post), so it is important to take a minute to make sure you enter the correct information. Make sure the Name for Public Display dropdown option is set to the name you want to display to the world. This is determined by choosing your username or first and last name or surname. And if your template includes resuming support, don’t forget to add that as well.
Finally, you will also need to set up Gravatar (using the same email account to log in to your WordPress) with the image you wish to use for your profile. Overall, a good header image makes sense, although you can upload whatever image you think will fit.
Step 3: Choose a WordPress theme to start a blog
This is where most new bloggers get stuck: they spend hours and hours searching for the perfect topic. So let me rest: your topic isn’t that important when you’re just getting started. Your sole goal should be to create and publish content for people to see. Don’t worry too much about designing your site until you have a huge audience telling you if they like it or not.
By default, you will see the annual WordPress theme active on your website. Automattic (the people behind WordPress) releases a new one every year and each one is geared towards bloggers (the latest Twenty-Twenty topic, but Twenty Twenty-one is on the way). Every year, this new theme is usually more than suitable for those just starting with WordPress to start a blog.
But at some point, you may want to switch to a more feature-rich theme for your growing website. Making the switch is easy – all you have to do is install a new theme. Just go to Appearance> Themes> Add New via the sidebar. Click the button to upload your topic. Then select the zip file of the theme to download and install the theme and then activate it. Dah ta! You have just installed a cool premium theme with more features and options than you will get in a free theme.
Step 4: Install the recommended plug-ins
If topics are the first hurdles for new bloggers, plugins should come second. It’s very easy to spend hours installing any number of plugins before doing anything about creating content. It is huge nonsense.
You don’t need any additional components to get started as a blogger. WordPress is well equipped once you get it out of the box. However, there are some plugins that I recommend that you install and activate to get the most out of your blog.
Note: Each of these plugins is free and can be installed by going to Plugins> Add New via the sidebar. Then you use the search box to search the repository for a free plugin (or click to download a plug-in that you downloaded elsewhere).
When you find the add-on you want, click the “Install now” link. Once the plugin is installed, you will be given the option to activate your new plugin. This! The plugin is now installed and activated. Setting up each of these recommended plugins should be very simple, but if you have any simple questions, you can ask them in the comments section below, or visit the plugin page on WordPress.org to open a support thread.
To protect against spam, try Akismet
Spam comments can be a big problem later if you don’t set one or two barriers to stop spammers. The number one plugin for this is Akismet for WordPress, and although there are other spam plugins available, we think it’s the best spam protection plugin for WordPress. Akismet is easy to use – just install, activate, and choose a “strict” level. Then, Akismet will scan your comments and automatically transfer the suspicious comments to your spam folder, all you have to do is remember to empty them.
To add social sharing, consider AddThis
You want people to share your content, right? So, if your theme does not support social sharing yet, you will need to install a plugin for this. A good free option is AddThis. This free social sharing plugin adds options to over 200 social networks, tons of button styles, and loads of placements (sidebar, header, widget, content, etc.), all for free. If you want to see their analytics or have more advanced sharing options, you’ll need a premium AddThis account, but for most bloggers, the plugin only offers a lot.
Improve your SEO with Yoast
Search engine optimization, or SEO for short, is an essential aspect of any website. But becoming an SEO expert takes years and even then you need to keep learning. This is why plugins like Yoast SEO are such an important plugin for WordPress users. We love Yoast SEO because it includes basic SEO options for breadcrumbs, headlines, snippets, keyword optimization, and more.
Add Google Analytics with MonsterInsights
A great way to find out how your site is performing is to track the traffic to your site with Google Analytics. Check out our guide on how to set up Google Analytics for your website, but once you create an account and add your tracking code to your website, you can start monitoring your website. Of course, you can manually check your Google Analytics account every day, but WordPress is a flexible content management system that offers lots of easy-to-use plugins that integrate your analytics into your WordPress dashboard. We recommend MonsterInsights because it works well with Yoast SEO; This way, you can combine your SEO strategy with SEO monitoring to get much better results.
Step 5: Start blogging
At this point, your blog is almost ready to produce content and there are only a few more things to take care of. The first is to get rid of the post, page, and comment template that WordPress includes by default.
Delete Sample page and post
First, click on the Page menu item in the sidebar. On your new blog, you will see only a one-page template that you can delete by hovering your mouse over each one and selecting the trash can option.
For now, you don’t need to create new pages, although you might want to come back later to create an About or Contact Page at some point. We are currently focused on making your blog work, which requires no more than posts. So click “Posts” in your sidebar and, as with your pages, delete the post template titled “Hello world!”
Now your blog is fresh, clean, and ready for your words of wisdom.
Create your first post
Let’s take a look at creating your first post. Simply go to Posts> Add New via your sidebar and a screen similar to the one shown below will appear:
There are three main points you need to publish your first post
- Create a title for your post: Place it in the field directly below “Add a new post”. Make it clear, concise, and engaging. It’s also a good idea to include your keyword.
- Write your content: This goes to the main window of the text editor that takes up most of the screen. This is a What You See Is What You Get editor (WYSIWYG for short), which means you can see the changes you make with the editor when using the built-in options (bold, italic, font sizes, links, etc.) or by entering media (images, video links, etc.).
- Featured Image, Category, and Tags – If you want to add a featured image, now is the time to do so. We also recommend using categories (general post groups) and tags (specific specialized descriptors) as they make it easier for readers to navigate your website later when you have hundreds of posts on your blog.
With these three points covered, click the Publish button. That’s it, creating content in WordPress is that easy! While there are several things you can do to improve and present your posts better, the key to getting started is this – getting started. You worry about the fine details later, but for now, post some content!
